Jian Wei Fong, Proprietor of the Stir Gallery
Wednesday, January 06, 2010How do you rate the art scene in Shanghai?
It's quite active and diverse, despite the city being known more for its concentration of commerce, shopping and dining. Shanghai is very international and its openness offers a chance for people with innovative and creative ideas to find their artistic outlet. There are a great number of art galleries that feature a wide range of works by both local and international artists. There are also a good number of museums scattered around the city and Shanghai hosts important art fairs. Most of the art venues are set-up in historical and culturally motivated neighborhoods.
What's the ethos behind Stir Gallery?
Stir Gallery was founded on the idea of promoting artistic and cultural diversity. It serves as a platform for artistic exchange by showing works by Chinese and international artists.
How do you combine the business and artistic side of Stir Art Gallery?
Via separating them. When I curate a show or am working with artists, I view art as art, with passion. And when I conduct sales, I offer professional services and help.
What's your most inspiring artistic meeting or happening?
There were so many. One of them was meeting and befriending my professor and great artist Raymond Saunders, who taught me the true meaning of art. We often traveled together, along with other artists of all ages. We immersed ourselves in different cultural experiences. I have learnt that art extends beyond my studio. Another turning point for me was my move to Shanghai, discovering its energy and dynamics, inspiring what I want to paint.
What advice would you give to other creative businesses?
Love what you do with passion, a bit of risk taking and - above all else - with creativity.
What do you do to enjoy Shanghai?
I like exploring the small alleys, streets in unassuming neighborhoods and dining out at local eateries. I like to experience the local flavors.
